Historical Sites in Sonoma County

The Pomo, Coast Miwok, and Wappo tribes have been inhabiting Sonoma County for thousands of years. It wasn’t until the early 19th century that England, Russia, and Spain lay claim to Sonoma County. Not much later, a man named General Mariano Vallejo was sent to Sonoma County under the Mexican government, and yet another country laid claim to the area. This Mexican rule resulted in the infamous Bear Flag Revolt that made California an independent state before officially becoming an American state. Many of the historical sites in Sonoma County from this era can be seen and toured today. We have broken down a list of just a few of the most popular sites in the area:

  • California Indian Museum and Cultural Center: This museum is a must-visit in Sonoma County to learn about the history and culture of California Indians. The museum conveys a story of natural abundance, human conflict, pain, suffering, and rebirth. Please consider visiting and exploring the exhibits about the First People of Sonoma.
  • Sonoma Plaza: The Sonoma Plaza was designed by General Mariano Vallejo back in 1835. The town square is home to the infamous Bear Flag Revolt that declared California an independent republic. The plaza is also a part of the Sonoma State Historic Park, which includes six historical buildings you can see nearby.
  • Mission San Francisco Solano: While you are at Sonoma Plaza, we highly recommend heading across the street to see the last California mission built under the Mexican era.
  • Jack London State Historic Park: See the home of renowned American author Jack London in Glen Ellen. This unique park features a museum, the ruins of the Wolf House, and miles of hiking trails. Embark on a guided tour or explore this historic park on your own.
  • Petaluma Adobe State Historic Park: When General Vallejo arrived in the Sonoma area, he needed a place to support and command his military. Hence the Petaluma Adobe was built, and today you can walk through the ranch and browse exhibits about early rancho life.
